The elusive comprehensions of life, death, and the journeys between them are beautifully examined at the first annual LAD Matters Film Festival in Boulder. Running from September 1st-4th at the legendary Nomad Theatre, this innovative fest is a celebration of the moments- and magic- that punctuate that journey.
Festival founders Karen van Vuuren and Erin Kelly launched LaD with the goal of celebrating cinema in a showcase that is "...provocative, educational, and inspirational, promoting a more conscious approach to how we live and how we die."
Blessedly free of Hollywood commercialism this cinematic deconstruction of life and death boasts an international cache of submissions spanning several genres and mediums.
In the Short Film Competition, notable gems include the awarding winning animated Australian short Mary and Max; the brilliant and innovative short documentary My Mother Said (Kuna Ni Nanang); and the subversive animated short about fame, 5 Minutes Each.
Feature highlights from the Feature Length Competition include the harrowing Mid-East documentary Little Town of Bethlehem and the Sundance Film Festival darling Undertow (Contracorriente).

Mary and Max was a short? I was holding it for 45 minutes! It must have been over an hour. I don't really know how these things are decided though.
