"Hey Bing- can we sue Seth MacFarlane for royalties?" |
TCM 365 Project Day 9: Road to Morocco (1942) dir.- David Butler
Arguably the most memorable of the 13 "Road To..." films that helped solidify the studio credentials of crooner Bing Crosby and comedian Bob Hope. Genuinely funny and often improvised, Hope and Crosby are to be best appreciated for their improvised gags, off-the-cuff returns, and wise-cracking duet sequences, leaving the remaining sequences (and guest actors) often treading in mediocrity.
Road To Morocco received several Academy Award nominations, including Best Sound, Best Writing and Best Original Screenplay. Look for quaint turns by Dorothy Lamour and Anthony Quinn.
If anything, it is required viewing to prepare you to enlighten teens who have no idea that the bulk of Family Guy's gags are nostalgic cultural references.

I have to admit my ignorance towards the "Road to..." movies. I loved all the Family Guy bits but had to be informed recently by my wife what inspired all those. Should have known they'd come from somewhere but never stopped to think about it.
